If you are a fan of translated works then I highly recommend seeking out this series from Pushkin. There's a sense of nostalgia, of course, and the dead brother and friend looms in the background -- as does a sense of so much else lost and washed away, toiled at over the years but leaving almost no trace. Unfortunately, nothing can wipe the pain away completely: Personal sadness. Captain Damian Seeker, meanwhile, is preoccupied by the horrifying discovery in an illegal gambling den of the body of a man ravaged by what is unmistakably a bear. Our narrator is a translator with an unusual occupation - he transcribes portions of books for the benefit of publishers in order that they may determine whether or not to translate the entire work into Japanese. When younger he would visit each summer and the three would construct impressive sandcastles on the beach.
The pair reminisce on how they met and on events from their past. Also: Camembert-tossing competitions! The story focuses on him spending some time on the seashore with his friend's younger sister and her young daughter, reminding him of previous times together. The final story, 'In the Old Castle', is the shortest, and begins with the narrator receiving a letter and old photograph of himself.
No strings just ideas, advice and support. Initially excited by their daring, events soon take a darker turn. Building a sandcastle by the sea which the second story concentrates on is an apt metaphor for the transience and constant changeability of life. Incidents during the journey irk him.
